Tindindi

I’m sitting here drinking my first glass of Tindindi chardonnay, and I’m pleased indeed. Tindindi is from the up-and-coming generation of boxed wines that aren’t awful. It’s fresh and tasty — nothing extraordinary, but certainly worth its price. Just a good ordinary everyday wine.

Since I’m the only person in the house who drinks wine, and my consumption is generally limited to at most a single small glass with dinner, wine around here would always wind up oxidizing badly. But this stuff is billed as keeping fresh for several weeks, unrefrigerated. Perfect.

I guess that makes sense — given that contact with air is the reason wine goes off after opening, then the collapsible container should be pretty much ideal. Even better than those things which purge your half-empty bottle with nitrogen or whatever.

I’ll miss the glass bottles if they go away, though.

The glass bottles will be sticking around for a while, I think, especially in the sort of wines that somebody might want to cellar. The manufacturers haven’t quite worked the bugs out of the collapsible container yet, and a very small amount of oxygen does make it through the plastic.

I’d miss the glass bottles, too, but I think I’d mostly miss looking at them in the grocery store. I wouldn’t so much miss using them. These 3-liter boxes are much lighter and easier to handle.

Actually, English Estate already had a “Bag in a Beautiful Box” program. They sell their wines–mostly delightful, mineral-based Pinot Noirs–in plastic bags with an air-tight valve. You can also get a pretty wooden box to put the bag into and serve it like it was a small keg. Not as economical as economical wines go, but it’s a good price for quality wine.

Er, I meant *has* a program. We still get bags from them on occasion.

Oooh…not awful boxed wines! I’m also the only wine drinker of the house, and drink small quantities. Thanks for the heads up! :)

    You’re welcome!

Another relatively inexpensive bag-in-box wine with a good reputation is Black Box.
