cookie Rorschach

One of the things given to me when my neighbor moved to Alaska was a bag of cookie cutters. One of these cutters baffles me.

What do you think it’s supposed to be?

It’s obviously a hippo in a tutu with a bouffant hairdo. Rotate it counterclockwise 90 degrees and it will be rightside-up.

    It’s an upside-down picture of a dinosaur-wheelbarrow hybrid.

That’s as close as I can come after ten minutes of contemplation.

Alternately, someone doing a vavavoom dance during a potato-sack race while waving one arm over her head.

I think this warrants a phone call to Alaska, personally.

Hey! That was going to be my answer.

The crazy-making thing is how hauntingly familiar it looks to me - and how looking at the picture before reading the post I remember thinking ‘oh, it’s an -’ but upon finding you were trying to figure it out, all concreteness fled.

Reindeer and sleigh? Really deformed ghost? a Dali-inspired melting guitar? John the Baptist - rotate it 90 degrees clockwise and I can see a humanoid figure with one arm raised standing in a pool of water. A deformed dollar sign signifying the melt-down of our economy? Oh, not a hippo but a nuclear meltdown at a cooling tower!

Note to self - if ever taking the Rorschach test for real, try not to get nuclear armageddon worked into the story.

A really ugly Christmas stocking? Rotate it 90 degrees clockwise…I was trying to see John the Baptist standing in a pool of water.

    You guys are awesome.

I traced the cookie cutter onto an index card. Josh has been tipping the card this way and that, as if the figure will pop into perspective like a Julian Beever illusion chalk drawing. So far, not so much.

I think Amnotsurly has got it: rotate it counterclockwise 90 degrees. It’s a silhouette of Father Christmas with his sack on his back. (That’s what’s throwing people off, I think–some folks are noticing it’s a figure with a sack on it’s back, but we Yanks are used to a fat and not a skinny St. Nicholas.)

(Maybe I should have waited to post this so that more folks could have gotten their speculations in. They’re a lot more fun.)

I agree about rotating it 90 degrees counterclockwise. But the “boob” is throwing me off.

And the skirt. Rotating it that way, I see more of a female cartoon character with a really oversized head. The sack is the curve of the head. The “boob” could be a boob or an elbow. If I knew of any cartoon characters that fit, that could be it. Otherwise…it seems kinda complicated.

I thought it might be Father Christmas, but those feet looked surprisingly stumpy to me. I think it might be Moomintroll in drag.

Witch on a broomstick? There is that funny sticky out bit though. Maybe it was made to use up the last of the dough. I always make a funny lump out of that

I found a picture among my “snoopy-stuff” that looks very much like your cookie cutter — it is snoopy in a chef’s hat with an apron on, turner in his hand etc. — but the feet do not seem to match the cutter — otherwise it is very much the same — shame I cannot upload the pic. So, I say it is snoopy in the backyard or kitchen cooking!

Hi, I found this cookie cutter on the internet, and Ive turned it upside down from the image you have shown. I think it looks like some kind of horse drawn carriage with the top back (like a convertible top or something). The triangular part looks as if it sets down, and the two things that stick out might be where you attach it to a horse… I dunno, but thats what it looks like to me. I hope this helps! Its definately an interesting cutter!
