There’s no Hallmark card for this, is there?

One of my mom’s friends, Jacqueline, has been confined to a wheelchair for thirty years or so. Doctors thought she suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident.

A couple of weeks ago, Jacqueline had surgery to remove a brain tumor.

She can walk now.

Not very well, of course — her legs have atrophied. Still, she takes a few steps each day under the guidance of her physical therapist.

Everybody’s dumbfounded.

WOW! As a PT-in-training, I find that absolutely amazing! I would love to be the PT on that case. (If she’s in the area, I wonder if she could do a talk on the case for the rehab department at the school?)

Best wishes to Jacqueline, I hope she recovers well.

Good thought! I’ll see if I can get the PT’s name.

In 30 years had no one thought to do a cat scan or MRI of her brain? It’s wonderful that she can walk again, but I can’t help but wonder why it took 30 years to figure out why she couldn’t.

that’s awesome! sad too, that she possibly could have been walking all these years, but there’s no going back and it’s not going to change things to be bitter so *wow*. good for her. i’m sure with the right treatments and therapies she will be walking more and more.

Holy crap! That’s got the be the best silver lining I’ve ever heard. “Well, the bad news is that I had to have a brain tumor removed. But the good news is that I can now walk again.”

    Very strange, but very cool.

As far as I know, nobody actually figured out why she couldn’t walk. The surgeons removed the brain tumor on general principle. A few weeks later, hey, check it out, walking!

I have no idea whether a cat scan or MRI was ever done before very recently.

If I discovered that a brain tumor kept me from walking all that time, then once I’d gotten my strength back I’d be gunning for every deity in the pantheon in epic revenge. Most of ‘em are already on my shit list as it is…
