Jump bags

It’s reasonable to speculate that, should the Big One hit Seattle in the foreseeable future, we’ll be on our own for quite some time as far as the federal government is concerned. And our local and state government may well be entirely overwhelmed.

It makes you think more carefully about emergency preparedness. Josh and I plan to put together some jump bags this weekend. (Link via Making Light.)

A few months ago, for no particular reason, I got on a kick where I was reading survival books and websites. Its kind of an interesting problem to think about in the abstract, but more than a little frightening to think about considering the situation in New Orleans.

The books on the subject seem to vary widely in quality. I should look over the pile and see which ones are worthwhile.

While on the kick, I ended up putting together something more or less like the jump kits. One in the car, and one at home. Even have a mini kit I throw in the tankbag on the motorcycle.

Cool. I’ve been looking for something like this. But I also want to find a list of supplies for staying at home in the event of an emergency.

Yeah, me too. That’ll be the next project. The Los Angeles Fire Department’s Earthquake Preparedness Handbook looks useful.

Actually, now that I think about it, it was this thread at Ask Metafilter that got me thinking about it. It’s also a pretty good resource for more info on the web.

I’ve been meaning to do something like that for a while (spurred on by the same Making Light post, probably) but my disaster preparedness is generally pretty haphazard.
