Freezer spelunking sweeps the nation
I’ve decided to follow the lead of my esteemed colleague in happy tomato-ranching bumship at I’m Mad And I Eat and clean out my freezer this month. Because, wow, have we ever run out of room.
As I pawed through the freezer today, I thought, “Who knows what lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows… But does he know what lurks in this freezer?” We’ve got some weird stuff in there. Most of it I can identify, but only most. I am chastened to see how much meat is in there. Folks, we hardly ever cook meat around here. (”Well, there you go, then,” some of you are saying.) And when we do, it’s usually because we’ve just gotten some “whey tastier” sausage from the Samish Bay Cheese people at the farmers’ market. I just don’t generally care for meat if it isn’t ground or minced or finely sliced. It’s a texture thing with me. Yecch.
I’m easing into this project of indoor ice fishing. Today’s spelunk lunch, frozen items starred: fava beans* and shiitake mushrooms* sauteed in olive oil and a little butter with garlic and a bit of sherry, served over whole-wheat noodles. And for dinner, I’m making a curry with potatoes, peas*, and cilantro*.
In fact, I wound up making rather more curry than I meant to. Well, I guess I can freeze the– arrrgh! No!

That is so weird! I just cleaned out my fridge/freezer yesterday. It was on a whim. If I feel the urge to clean something, I stay with it until the thing is cleaned, as the urge is very infrequent. Jon has learned stand back and let me clean, no matter what we have planned, as that’s probably the only time it will get cleaned. I ended up throwing out most of the stuff because it was a couple of years old and from the old fridge. Now the whole thing smells like vinegar as I used that to melt down some icky brown goo at the bottom.

Oh, the dreaded brown goo. I suspect I’ll find some brown goo at the end of my freezer excavations.

Well, what can’t be frozen could be given away. Just a thought, probably one that you have already had. I for one would like to take the curry off your hands if it weren’t for logistical problems.

My freezer purging is coming along quite well. I think I have now used ALL the non-vacuum-packed meats from the big freezer, and am working on the same from the fridge one. Also some of the other stuff from both places. This summer I want to be able to freeze rather more stuff than I did last year, and so I need the room.
I still get tempted by stuff to freeze, though….
