My del.icio.us bookmarks for May 13th through May 14th
These are my links for May 13th through May 14th:
- blog.talkingphilosophy.com » Diversions – Includes philosopher Julian Baggini’s cackle-worthy “digested” versions of philosophical classics. So far he’s done Aristotle’s Ethics and Plato’s Republic.
- Mastermaid – A Norwegian folktale of Aarne-Thompson type 313 (“The girl helps the hero flee”) from D. L. Ashliman’s library of folktales, folklore, fairy tales, and mythology.
- Wezirmes Saves the Narts from the Famine – With links to more Nart tales.
- Kyle Van Houtan and Daniel Pauly – trawler mudtrail images – Shrimp trawlers churn up such pervasive and smothering mud trails that in some places they’re operating as a significant new geological force. The satellite photos of trawlers off the coast of China are flabbergasting.
- Speaking of fake ‘butter’ and industrial corn … | Gristmill: The environmental news blog | Grist – Fake butter flavor — diacetyl — causes irreparable, sometimes fatal damage to workers’ lungs. (Can the fumes be harming consumers, too? Nobody knows.) industry flacks insist that there’s no substitute for fake butter. Hm.

Concerning fake butter: There are so many useful things that I wouldn’t want to breathe. I like walking and driving on asphalt, but I wouldn’t want to breathe vaporized asphalt. If it’s killing workers, it probably ought to be banned if there isn’t a way for workers to breathe clean air. As far as a bag of fumes, treat it like second-hand smoke. A little bit won’t kill you, repeated exposure might.
Besides, microwave popcorn is lame. Real popcorn comes air-popped and is then covered with (real) butter and salt as desired. (I know I’m in the minority here, but it’s an opinion that isn’t likely to budge.)

You’re certainly not in the minority at my house. Though lately I’ve been enjoying a little bit of Red Star nutritional yeast on top of my popcorn, too. (Nutritional yeast: it’s not just for vegans any more.) It’s pure umami, that stuff.
Air-popped corn is cheaper and less likely to get scorched. Plus the smell is better. The scent of air-popped popcorn is delicious; the scent of microwave popcorn with fake butter, imho, is kind of revolting.

Clearly, they need to come up with a fake-butter substitute. I foresee “I Can’t Believe It’s Not ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!”!”
