the best way to develop it is to do the real-world stuff

Most definitely. Every year I was in college I spent the summer working on the landscaping team. It felt so good to get out of my head and into my body, into the dirt. Of course, by the end of the summer I was ready for mental stimulation again, but I realized that I'm always going to need a balance of both in my life. It's just a matter of figuring out what proportion is "balance." It's probably different for everybody.
