It's a potentially lethal problem. So you have to clean them off. Our Delaware was having what looked to me like a mild problem with this. Cleaning the dried poop off a tiny, struggling, delicate little chick turns out to be a two-person job. We tried a number of methods, but the best one seemed to be to get a warm, very wet washcloth and just hold it against the chick's rear for a while to soften the stuff up. (One person can do that alone.) Then one person can hold the chick in both hands while the other one swipes at its vent with the washcloth. The chick <em>does not enjoy this</em>. But I can tell that it's a lot happier now -- it's eating voraciously and has stopped with the loud shrilling.
