Okay, animal world, you win
I was going to move the birdhouse away from the clothesline for fear of disturbing any inhabitants. But now that bees have apparently taken up residence in the birdhouse, the intimidation is going quite the other way. For once I wish I could find my camera.

I’d say bumblebees. I’m still trying to get a really good look at them; the birdhouse they’re in is a little high up for convenience, and I’ve misplaced my binoculars. I’ll put up a photo when I can find the right stupid USB cable.
Now that I’m over my surprise, I’m inclined to just let them hang out where they are and consider myself lucky.
